Pony AI (PONY) Sees Robotaxi Fares Soar as Global Fleet Expands

Pony AI's (PONY) robotaxi fares increased dramatically, with revenue expanding 849.3% year-over-year in the second quarter. The company reported $12.1 million in robotaxi revenue, leading to a total revenue of $36.2 million, a 68.8% increase from the previous year. Despite the rapid growth, the company is still operating at a loss, with an operating loss of $65.7 million.

However, the losses are narrowing, with a margin improvement from negative 285.6% to negative 181.5% year-over-year. Pony AI's fleet of 1,975 robotaxis is set to grow to over 3,500 by the end of the year, and the company is leveraging a joint deployment model where external partners fund the vehicles. This approach has resulted in over 4,000 international vehicle commitments, particularly in European cities and China.

The company's simulation system, PonyWorld 2.0, has enabled rapid adaptation of driving software to new cities. Nonetheless, the capital expenditures rose significantly to $32.2 million, leading to negative free cash flow of $76.2 million. The company's CFO also revealed a $25.0 million impairment on prepayments for unrecoverable long-term investments.

Despite the growth, only 4% increase in Intelligent Solutions revenue was reported, indicating a slowdown in that segment.
