Police, Army move to restore calm after deadly violence in Lagos

Police and Nigerian Army forces deployed to Ikola area in Lagos following violent clash that left three dead and two injured

The Lagos State Police Command and Nigerian Army have sent security personnel to the Ikola district of Lagos after a violent incident that resulted in three deaths and two injuries, along with the burning of several buildings. The police reported that calm was restored in the area following the Thursday, August 27, 2026 clash.

Preliminary reports indicate the dispute began when suspected area boys stopped a tricycle rider and demanded ₦200. The rider, who refused to pay, allegedly returned to the area with others, leading to a violent confrontation between the two groups. The clash reportedly caused the deaths of three individuals, injuries to two others, and the burning of buildings.

The deceased and injured persons were transported to the Military Hospital in Yaba for medical care. Following the incident, Lagos State Police Commissioner CP Tijani Olaiwola Fatai and the Commander of 9 Brigade Nigerian Army, Brig. Gen. Afolabi Owolabi, visited the scene to evaluate the situation and direct the security response. The police mentioned that the Rapid Response Squad, Task Force, Tactical Squad, Police Mobile Force, Eko Strike Force, and Violent Crime Response Unit were deployed to the area.

The police command stated that the situation was under control and efforts were underway to prevent further escalation. They also began an investigation into the incident, promising that anyone found responsible would face the full force of the law. Residents were advised to remain calm and refrain from spreading unverified information that could exacerbate tensions. The police urged the public to provide credible information to assist the ongoing investigation.
