Poland goes after Meta with €250m fine request, says tech giant isn’t doing enough to stop scam ads

WARSAW, Aug 27 — Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs Krzysztof Gawkowski has formally requested that the European Commission impose a €250 million fine on US tech giant Meta, according to Xinhua. The request was submitted following a review of materials, including those provided by Meta, and media reports about the company's inadequate content moderation, Gawkowski shared on the social media platform X. Gawkowski emphasized that digital platforms must assume full responsibility for their actions, stating that inaction and ineffectiveness in combating scam advertisements and harmful fraudulent content to Poles will not be accepted.

He indicated that he anticipates the European Commission to promptly commence proceedings and levy the penalty. Gawkowski urged Meta to introduce effective measures immediately to eradicate scams, false advertisements, and the promotion of illegal applications. Meta is the owner and operator of popular social media and communication platforms, such as Facebook and Instagram.
