People from more than 30 countries are missing after the flash floods in Nepal and China

A glacier collapse in Tibet triggered devastating flash floods on Wednesday, resulting in catastrophic flooding along the border of China and Nepal on Thursday. Both nations have reported more than 160 fatalities and over 1,300 people reported missing as of the following day. A significant proportion of those missing comprise foreigners who were in the area for trekking or a religious pilgrimage to a revered Hindu site.

The discrepancy in reported figures arises from differences in data collection methods, reporting times, verification processes, and coordination between data assemblers and rescue teams.

According to Nepal Police, at least 165 residents are dead and 826 are missing. The National Emergency Operation Center stated Thursday that among the missing are 113 Nepali tourists, 85 security personnel from the army and police, 161 locals from the Rasuwa district, and one individual from the Nuwakot district. The National Tourism Board later disclosed that 517 foreigners are missing.

Chinese state media reported that at least three people perished and 558 are missing in Gyirong County, Tibet. CCTV stated that 260 of the 558 missing individuals are foreigners. Furthermore, nearly 100 Chinese citizens are unaccounted for on the Nepal side, according to China's foreign ministry.

India's Nepal tourism board reported that 179 of those missing are from India. Most of the missing individuals are believed to be on a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash, a site of religious significance for Hindus. The United States reported that 65 of the missing individuals are from its country.
