NEW DELHI: National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) reported on Thursday that Nepal’s glacial lake outburst floods have not caused any adverse impact on the Indian side. While the Centre and states are keeping a close watch on the situation in bordering districts of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to prevent any possible risk from the excessive river waters flowing into India, NDRF has already deployed 20 teams for evacuation, relief, and rescue operations.
The teams are distributed among Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, with an NDRF team stationed in Kushinagar district, close to Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh. NDRF Inspector General Narendra Bundela informed in a media briefing that the floods have led to significant destruction in Nepal, resulting in hundreds of people, including Indian tourists, being reported missing.
Bundela also confirmed that the government is monitoring the excessive flow of water in the first barrage along the India-Nepal border in Bihar’s Valmiki Nagar (West Champaran district) on the Gandak river. Fortunately, the situation is reportedly under control. In terms of humanitarian assistance extended to Nepal, Bundela mentioned that India has dispatched two planeloads of aid and relief supplies, including medicines, to Kathmandu on Wednesday and Thursday.
