'Onion Sale At ₹35 Per Kg Begins; No Shortage In Country,' Says Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare | VIDEO

New Delhi, August 27, 2026: The government announced the beginning of retail onion sales at ₹35 per kilogram from its price stabilization buffer on Thursday, aimed at providing relief to consumers amid rising prices. Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare launched the onion distribution campaign at Krishi Bhawan.

Initially, onions will be sold at the subsidized rate through outlets and mobile vans operated by the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED), the National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCCF), and Kendriya Bhandars. Khare emphasized that the government consistently strives to ensure consumers get onions at subsidised rates whenever prices increase.

Khare affirmed that there is no onion shortage in the country, both in terms of production and availability. She reiterated the government's commitment to protecting consumers from sudden spikes in onion prices. Onion exports this year are also at almost the same level as last year, according to Khare.

NAFED Managing Director Deepak Agarwal informed that the sale of onions through mobile vans has already commenced at 40 locations across Delhi. Further, onions will be available through NAFED and NCCF stores, e-commerce platforms, and organized retail chains. Discussions are underway with the Delhi government to include onions in the Public Distribution System (PDS) shops, which could benefit a large number of consumers if implemented.

NACCF Managing Director Anice Joseph Chandra confirmed that the organization initiated retail sales immediately after the campaign launch from Krishi Bhawan. She added that the retail network will be expanded in the coming days to ensure that affordable onions reach a larger number of consumers.
