CDA Launches New Waste Management System After Recent Drainage Disaster

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has unveiled a new solid waste management system for rural Islamabad following recent flooding in Rawalpindi, which exposed critical issues related to drainage, waste, and urban management. The initiative targets 65 union councils in Zones IV and V, with the CDA planning to handle approximately 342 tonnes of waste daily using a state-of-the-art collection and disposal network.

This plan envisions the deployment of 1,610 workers and 103 types of machinery for sanitation and waste collection. Door-to-door collection will be introduced in specific areas, including Bani Gala, Ghouri Town, and Lehtrar. In locations with narrow roads and challenging access, mini tippers and hand carts will be utilized. To monitor waste collection and transportation, GPS tracking and route optimization will be employed.

Additionally, the CDA will establish a central command and control system to oversee field operations. Performance reports, digital attendance, facial monitoring, and the Safe City system will enhance supervision and ensure prompt resolution of complaints. The implementation of the new system will be supported by a Turkish waste management company.

This initiative follows devastating monsoon flooding in Rawalpindi, which caused urban flooding, damaged infrastructure, and resulted in fatalities, underscoring concerns over drainage and waste management in the twin cities. CDA Chairman Sohail Ashraf pledged to address cleanliness comprehensively across Islamabad. The member of the Environment, Abdullah Khurram Niazi, will oversee the execution of the new system.
