Omarchy distro gains serious backing

The controversial Omarchy distro is gaining serious backing, with both fans and financial support. Omarchy is an opinionated spin-off of Arch Linux, created by Ruby on Rails creator David Heinemeier Hansson, also known as DHH. This week, Omarchy 4.0.1 was released, which addresses a security issue from the mid-August Omarchy 4 "Quattro" release.

Omarchy has a sibling project called Omakub, which is based on Ubuntu. The project is backed by a foundation called Omacom, with funding from notable figures including Shopify, Stripe, Dell, Block, Cloudflare, Sesame, and 37signals. The most recent contribution brought the total funding to $10 million.

Criticism of Omarchy is strong, with some calling it insecure and not suitable for those concerned about machine security. However, others appreciate its unique UI, based on the Hyprland tiling compositor, and its keyboard-driven system, which disregards most existing keyboard shortcuts and UI conventions. Despite the criticisms, Omarchy remains a fast and striking distro, with a wide range of preinstalled applications and optional extras, including Discord, WhatsApp, Docker, Obsidian, Neovim, and OBS Studio.
