Oil prices extend losses on expectations talks to ease Middle East supply woes

On Thursday, August 27, oil prices continued to decline, further extending a series of losses that have persisted for several days, according to market reports. The expectation of negotiations between Iran and Qatar to facilitate the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz contributed to the downward trend. Brent crude futures experienced a drop of 60 cents, or 0.7 percent, bringing the price to $87.24 a barrel, marking the fourth consecutive day of decline.

West Texas Intermediate crude futures also fell by 56 cents, or 0.7 percent, to $81.67, marking the fifth day of consecutive losses. Iran and Oman are reportedly nearing completion of an agreement to manage the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway linking major Gulf oil producers to global markets. The strait, which once accommodated oil and natural gas shipments equivalent to approximately one-fifth of global consumption prior to the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran, now carries only around one-quarter of its pre-war levels.

Ship-tracking data indicates a significant reduction in oil flows since Iran closed the waterway in response to the conflict. Daniel Hynes, a senior commodity strategist at ANZ, commented on the positive outlook for the Strait of Hormuz reopening, although he cautioned that concerns regarding potential supply shortages in the oil market still exist.
