NSCDC arrests three over illegal sand mining in Anambra

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, based in Anambra State, has apprehended three individuals for engaging in unauthorized sand mining activities at Obiaja River, situated along the Nnobi-Ideani Junction, Uke Road in Idemili South Local Government Area. During a press conference held at the state command headquarters in Awka, State Commandant Maku Olatunde disclosed that the arrest took place on August 26, 2026, around 14:07 hours, following intelligence-led operations by the Mines and Steel Development Unit in collaboration with the Federal Mines Officer.

The three suspects - Patrick Anpue, Chidubem Ugammadu, and Chukwuma Igwe - were apprehended for their involvement in the illegal sand extraction at the river. The command's determination to prevent unregulated mining and safeguard mineral resources from exploitation by unauthorized operators prompted this operation. Exhibits seized from the suspects included two tippers with registration numbers XA 653 GBZ and GDD 423 XB, six shovels, and a wheelbarrow.

They confessed to mining activities without proper authorization or legal documentation. The suspects are currently under investigation and will be charged in court upon the completion of the investigation. Olatunde emphasized the NSCDC's commitment to protecting critical national assets, including solid minerals, and urged the public to report any suspected illegal sand mining activities to the NSCDC.
