NSCDC arrests three over illegal sand mining in Anambra

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Anambra State has apprehended three individuals for allegedly engaging in illegal sand mining at Obiaja River, located along the Nnobi-Ideani Junction on Uke Road in Idemili South Local Government Area. The State Commandant, Maku Olatunde, announced the arrests during a media briefing at the NSCDC Headquarters in Awka on Wednesday.

Olatunde revealed that the operation was carried out in collaboration with the Federal Mines Officer in the state, based on reliable intelligence. The three suspects, Patrick Anpue (45, from Umuagu Village, Nnobi), Chidubem Ugammadu (44, from Urumkpu Village, Umuoji), and Chukwuma Igwe (47, from Umuanocha Village, Awka-Etiti), were apprehended at the site of the alleged illegal mining activities.

The NSCDC seized two tippers, six shovels, and one wheelbarrow during the operation. The suspects have admitted to mining without proper authorization and required permits from the relevant authorities. Olatunde emphasized the NSCDC's commitment to safeguarding critical national assets, including solid minerals, and warned against illegal sand mining or related activities, stating that offenders will face the full force of the law. The public is encouraged to report any suspected instances of illegal sand mining to the NSCDC.
