Nilekani panel races to ready 2027 rollout plan

New Delhi - The Nandan Nilekani-led High-Powered Task Force (HPTF) on examination reforms is rapidly preparing an action plan for changes to be implemented from the 2027 NEET-UG and other entrance exam cycles, according to recent reports. The primary focus areas include enabling a multi-day and multi-shift computer-based testing (CBT) system for NEET-UG, securing government-backed test centres through strong coordination with state governments, and seeking public feedback.

The task force has already held two meetings and is scheduled to hold another one next week, with additional consultations with state-level officials planned for the coming week. Once all consultations are completed by mid-September, the panel aims to finalize its report, allowing sufficient time for the government to act on the recommendations ahead of the 2027 exam cycle.

The task force's ten-point Terms of Reference cover a wide range of topics, from exam design and conduct to the institutionalization of governance mechanisms and the utilization of the latest technologies. Key areas of focus include implementing a JEE-like CBT mechanism for NEET-UG, which is deemed feasible based on existing successful experiences, and securing funding for government-backed testing infrastructure.

The HPTF, chaired by technocrat Nandan Nilekani, was established on July 27, with the objective of examining exam reforms and ensuring the credibility of upcoming examinations. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the panel's formation, emphasizing the urgency of addressing the credibility concerns surrounding these crucial tests.
