Nepal floods: More than 160 killed, nearly 1,400 missing

A devastating flash flood has resulted in over 160 fatalities and nearly 1,400 people still unaccounted for in Nepal and Tibet. The disaster occurred when a glacial collapse sent a torrent of mud and rock crashing through Himalayan communities, obliterating entire villages along the border. Rescue teams are actively searching for survivors, but authorities warn that another disaster could soon occur as a lake formed by floodwaters threatens to burst.

More than 1,400 people are missing, including a significant number of foreign tourists from countries like India, the United States, Australia, Britain, Canada, and Germany. Nepal has mobilized over 5,000 army and police personnel to aid in the rescue efforts, using helicopters to distribute supplies such as tents, food, and medical kits.

As the scale of the disaster became clear, local residents recounted the terrifying experience of a rapidly rising mudslide that engulfed their homes. Experts attribute the disaster to climate change, with rapidly melting glaciers in the Himalayas increasing the risk of such catastrophic events.
