NCPTA gives WAEC seven-day ultimatum over 2026 BECE grading

The National Council of Parent Teacher Associations (NCPTA) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) demanding clarification on the conversion of raw marks to final grades for the 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). If WAEC fails to respond, NCPTA warns of potential further action.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra, NCPTA National Secretary Gapson Kofi Raphael called for an independent technical review of the assessment and grading process. The NCPTA is seeking a clear explanation from WAEC regarding how raw scores are transformed into grades on students' results, emphasizing the need for greater transparency.

They argue this is crucial to address concerns over the 2026 BECE results and to restore confidence in the examination process. Additionally, NCPTA demands a clear timeline for resolving cases of withheld results and establishes a mechanism for candidates and parents to seek clarification, raise concerns, or request a review of disputed results.

Beyond BECE issues, NCPTA also expressed alarm over growing indiscipline in Ghanaian schools, citing issues such as bullying, drug abuse, examination malpractice, and attacks on teachers. They argue this undermines efforts to raise responsible, disciplined, and well-rounded young people and calls for stronger measures to address these problems while urging stakeholders to collaborate in protecting the integrity of Ghana's education system.
