Muhoozi Declares Presidential Bid, Targets Uganda’s 2031 Election

General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda's military chief, has announced his intention to run for the presidency in 2031, setting his sights on the highest office in the land. The 52-year-old son of President Yoweri Museveni made the declaration on social media, stating that with his father's backing, he expects to secure a significant victory in the forthcoming elections.

Kainerugaba, who leads the Patriotic League of Uganda, has previously expressed his desire for the presidency and had been considering contesting the 2026 election, although he ultimately decided against it. The announcement has reignited speculation about Uganda's political succession and Kainerugaba's ambitions to eventually assume power, following Museveni, who has been in office since 1986.

While the government spokesperson clarified that Museveni and the ruling National Resistance Movement would decide on his political future at a later date, Kainerugaba's declaration has once again brought the issue of succession to the forefront of Uganda's political discourse. The military chief has gained notoriety for his outspoken social media presence, often targeting opposition figures, and played a significant role in securing his father's re-election in 2026, including through actions against opposition forces and an internet shutdown.

Critics contend that criticisms of human rights abuses under Museveni's rule, such as arbitrary detention and torture, remain unproven. Consequently, Kainerugaba's declaration is likely to fuel debate over Uganda's political transition within the Museveni family and the role the military chief may play in the nation's future. For now, Museveni's position remains unchanged, and the government has not confirmed whether he plans to seek another term.
