Judge stops Montana psychiatric facility from breaking ground, orders new environmental study

Opponents of a proposed forensic mental health facility in Laurel, Montana, received a favorable ruling from a judge on Wednesday. The Yellowstone County District Court granted a preliminary injunction, halting construction of the 32-bed facility pending further environmental review. The Laurel CARED group, which brought the lawsuit, argued that the state had not adequately assessed the water availability at the proposed site, just west of the city.

Their attorney, Liz Forster, expressed concerns that the state might use eminent domain to acquire necessary water services, should the facility proceed without proper planning. The judge's decision ensures that the environmental assessment process is followed, which local residents believe will provide a more comprehensive understanding of the facility's water needs and prevent potential issues with water supply.
