Meta fixes distressingly obvious smart glasses recording LED loophole

Meta, the parent company of the popular messaging platform Facebook, is patching a security loophole in its smart glasses that allowed users to discreetly film people without their knowledge. The issue arises from the glasses' design, which includes a visible LED that indicates when the device is recording. To prevent tampering, Meta's software was supposed to halt recording if the LED was obstructed.

However, it was discovered that the check for the LED only occurred when the glasses were first turned on and a recording started. This left users the opportunity to activate recording and then cover the LED, effectively bypassing the security measure.

The vulnerability is reminiscent of a trick used by retro gamers on the PlayStation 1, where the console only checked the integrity of discs at startup. Players could take advantage of this by booting the system with a legitimate disc inserted and then quickly swapping it out for an imported or pirated copy. Meta is currently rolling out a fix to address this flaw, ensuring that the recording LED will be monitored continuously to prevent surreptitious recording.

The concern over smart glasses privacy has grown in recent times, particularly regarding covert filming. While smartphones are already capable of surreptitious video recording, many people are uneasy about the idea of being filmed with smart glasses and having no way of knowing it. Manufacturers have been responding to this pressure by designing their glasses with conspicuous recording LEDs, signaling to anyone nearby that the device is actively recording.

Meta's decision to patch this vulnerability is a direct response to these privacy concerns and reinforces the need for manufacturers to ensure their smart glasses' features are secure and transparent.
