Magnitude 5 earthquake hits Tibet, hundreds of miles north of Himalayan flood

An aerial footage captured the devastation caused by flash floods near the Gyirong Port, situated on the Nepal-China border near Tibet. Before the disaster, the port appeared intact, but after the floods, the scene was a mudslide-affected landscape. The port is a significant trading hub and holds importance for China. Gyirong Port's road connecting Gyirong Township and the port was subsequently blocked in both directions.

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV reported that the tragedy resulted in major casualties and missing individuals on the Nepalese side. A video went viral showing people fleeing from the port as the floodwaters surged. Over a thousand people are missing on both sides of the Nepal-Tibet border, with 558 reported missing in Tibet and more than a thousand globally.

Around 200 Indian nationals sought evacuation assistance on the Tibet side, and as of now, 362 people have lost their lives, with 359 in Nepal and three in Tibet. The disaster caused homes to be demolished, infrastructure like roads, bridges, and hydropower projects to be damaged, primarily due to a glacial collapse triggering an ice-rock avalanche. Rescue operations are ongoing, and the death toll continues to rise.
