Limpopo man jailed for 22 years for raping 71-year-old neighbour

A Limpopo man has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for raping his 71-year-old neighbour, according to the Sibasa Regional Court. The man, who cannot be identified due to the victim's privacy and safety concerns, faced a not guilty plea during the trial. The court heard that in 2019, the man observed the woman returning home from a bus stop and followed her into her residence.

Following a struggle, he raped her. The victim subsequently sought medical assistance at a clinic and received further care and support at the Tshilidzini Thuthuzela Care Centre. The incident was reported to the police, leading to the man's arrest and prosecution. State Prosecutor Muligi Mphedziseni Eric called for a life sentence, citing the woman's vulnerable status as an older person under the Older Persons Act 13 of 2006, her residence being a place of safety, and the severe trauma she endured from a trusted neighbour.

The court ultimately sentenced the man to 22 years without parole, ordered his name to be added to the National Register for Sex Offenders, and declared him ineligible to own a firearm. The Director of Public Prosecutions in Limpopo praised the sentence, emphasizing the National Prosecuting Authority's dedication to justice for gender-based violence victims and the protection of vulnerable individuals.
