Lawrence O’Donnell Says Trump Is Committing the ‘Biggest Crime of Mail Obstruction in American History’

MS NOW anchor Lawrence O’Donnell harshly criticized Donald Trump during the Wednesday night episode of "The Last Word," alleging that the president's efforts to obstruct mail-in voting during the recent midterm elections constituted "the biggest crime of mail obstruction in American history." "What Abraham Lincoln gave us, Donald Trump wants to take away," O’Donnell stated at the beginning of the segment.

"The first significant use of voting by mail occurred during the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln trusted the Postal Service to deliver that mail. He trusted those envelopes."

O’Donnell further elaborated on the subject, highlighting that Postmaster General David Steiner has publicly pledged to disregard the law for Trump. He declared that Steiner is "eager to obstruct millions and millions of pieces of mail" and vowed to "violate the law and not deliver mail" if it contains election ballots from or to individuals that Steiner believes should lose the right to vote.

The anchor also pointed out the Supreme Court's recent decision in Trump's favor regarding mail-in voting. He argued that the conservative majority on the Court "rejected an attempt to block Donald Trump from committing this crime," as they stated it was premature to determine the illegal nature of Trump's plan since Steiner had not yet finalized a new rule for handling mail-in ballots. Despite this, the rule was released on Friday, granting Steiner authority over all ballots mailed within the United States.

O’Donnell further emphasized that only Congress has the legal authority to determine what constitutes acceptable and unacceptable forms of mail to the Postal Service. He expressed deep disappointment in Steiner's lack of objection to Trump's demands, calling him "another disgraceful and now permanently, lifetime-disgraced Trump accomplice trying to commit the crime against democracy that Donald Trump wants him to commit."
