LAWMA seals market, targets 24 facilities in Lekki axis over waste violations

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has targeted 24 markets, commercial, and institutional facilities along the Ajah-Lekki axis for compliance enforcement due to repeated violations of waste management and environmental regulations. Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, shared this information on August 26, 2026, following a monitoring and enforcement exercise conducted on August 25, 2026, by LAWMA's Project WISE team along with officials from the Kick Against Indiscipline, military personnel, and the Nigeria Police.

The facilities were identified due to observed breaches of approved waste management requirements. LAWMA will continue to engage operators and monitor their compliance before taking enforcement action against persistent defaulters. At Eleganza, the enforcement team removed illegal structures along roadways and pedestrian paths that obstructed traffic and pedestrian movement, while Issa Imamu Market was sealed due to continuous improper waste disposal along the roadside.

LAWMA emphasizes the importance of sustained compliance to avoid indiscriminate dumping, protect public spaces, and maintain a cleaner environment across Lagos. In October 2024, the Lagos State Government had previously shut down Mile 12 and Owode Onirin markets due to unsanitary conditions and multiple environmental breaches, underscoring the ongoing commitment to enhancing compliance with waste management and environmental regulations in Lagos.
