KTS-BLD Foundation donates 100 doses of RSV antibodies worth RM160,000 for high-risk infants

KTS-BLD Foundation donated 100 doses of RSV antibodies, valued at RM160,000, to Sarawak's high-risk infants to protect them against severe respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection. The long-acting monoclonal antibodies are reserved for the most clinically vulnerable infants, with SGH neonatologist and general paediatrician Dr Amita Vivehanantham estimating the hospital sees 10 to 12 eligible infants per month.

The single-dose treatment provides passive protection for about five to six months, compared to the previous monthly injections required. The initiative coordinator, Prof Dr Toh Teck Hock, highlighted cost as a barrier to RSV prevention, noting that the pilot would help bridge the gap by directing the doses to families who cannot afford private care.

SGH director Dr Ngian Hie Ung expressed gratitude for the KTS-BLD Foundation's support, emphasizing the single-dose option would spare fragile infants from repeated needle trauma and ease financial burdens on parents. A public education series will be conducted by The Borneo Post, Utusan Borneo, and See Hua Daily News to raise awareness about RSV risks, warning signs, and preventive measures.
