‘It’s a Step Forward in All Respects’ – Exclusive GTA 6 Interview

Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to release in November, and developers at Rockstar North have shared some details about the highly anticipated game. Co-studio head Rob Nelson discussed the challenges of evolving the series and creating a rich and immersive world for players to explore.

Nelson emphasized the importance of creating a world that offers meaningful activities beyond simple sidequests and stat boosting. He highlighted the significance of the setting, Leonida, and the sheer scale of the game, noting that no single team member can fully understand it all.

When it comes to interactions with non-playable characters (NPCs), Rockstar North has taken things to the next level. The team has focused on creating more nuanced dialogue and behaviors for NPCs, making them respond differently based on their proximity to the player. For example, standing too close while eavesdropping may cause NPCs to turn around and ask if help is needed, while following them too closely could result in aggressive reactions.

Rockstar North dedicated a team solely to crafting NPC dialogue, which led to some memorable lines in the game, such as "You can use my balls like a punching bag" and "I can pee on you if you pay me." The developers have also implemented a Criminal Profile system, inspired by the Honor system from Red Dead Redemption 2, which dynamically alters based on the player's actions.

However, the profile isn't meant to encourage players to be perfect citizens but rather to allow them to enjoy the game's criminal aspects to the fullest.

The developers faced a significant challenge in balancing the game's humor with its satirical nature. They considered four potential protagonists before settling on a criminal couple, Jason and Lucia, whose relationship can be played as both romantic and platonic. With immense anticipation and pressure to deliver, Rockstar North is "nervous" about the expectations surrounding GTA 6.
