India closing in on big win in Colombo

India is on the verge of securing a significant victory in the second Test match against Sri Lanka in Colombo. Sri Lanka found themselves in a precarious position on day four of the match, with a score of 229 for six after stumps. They had been compelled to follow on by India, who had won the first Test in Galle by 165 runs. Sri Lanka's lead over India was just 16 runs, and with four wickets in hand, they aimed to clinch a series sweep by the match's end.

Sonal Dinusha, who delivered an outstanding performance in the first innings, was still unbeaten on seven when rain interrupted play prematurely. The Indian team now faces an uphill battle to contain the tail, which has been the standout performer for Sri Lanka, having scored 100 and 84 in Galle.

Following the resumption of play, Sri Lanka amassed 290 runs, needing 39 to avoid the follow-on. Despite losing their first two openers, Kamindu Mendis and Pasindu Sooriyabandara provided much-needed support with a 115-run partnership. Sooriyabandara, who had also scored 80 in the first innings, excelled against the spinners with his clever footwork, while Mendis capitalized on the short ball delivery.

India capitalized on the breakthrough wicket when Mendis was out for 55, caught by Shubman Gill at square leg. The spinners quickly tightened their grip, causing Sri Lanka to lose three wickets for just nine runs. As India regained control, they began to tire due to the prolonged fielding period. However, Sri Lanka's batsmen failed to seize the advantage, with several of them losing their wickets hastily as India closed in on a substantial win.
