Iain Wares' sentencing postponed due to health issues in court

The sentencing hearing for convicted child sex offender Iain Wares was delayed due to his health situation at Wynberg Magistrate's Court. Wares faced pre-sentencing proceedings on Wednesday, following his 1988 conviction for indecent assault on a former pupil at Rondebosch Boys’ Preparatory School. WMACA, a women's advocacy group, had three members present to hear arguments both for and against the sentence.

Wares' lawyer, William Fullard, called upon social worker Arina Smit to present her comprehensive 76-page reports, including a risk assessment and psychosocial evaluations. WMACA expressed concern over the late delivery of these reports, which were expected weeks prior. The organization advocated for a custodial sentence, emphasizing the long-term impact of child sexual abuse and urging the State to focus on the survivor's experience.

Wares' condition worsened during a lunch break, allegedly collapsing due to a pre-existing health issue. The court adjourned until September 4, allowing the Defense to proceed with further evidence from an expert witness. This is not the first delay in Wares' sentencing journey, with previous interruptions due to his health and the completion of reports.

The ultimate goal for WMACA remains a sentence that accurately reflects the gravity of the offense and its impact on the survivor. The case will reconvene at the Wynberg Magistrate's Court on September 4.
