Hackers steal data from millions of airport customers

Three major UK airports, including Manchester, East Midlands, and London Stansted, were targeted by cybercriminals who accessed sensitive data from nearly nine million individuals, demanding a ransom. Manchester Airports Group (MAG), the owner of these airports, disclosed that the hackers obtained customers' contact details, vehicle registrations, and postcodes.

MAG refused to pay the ransom, which remains undisclosed. The incident did not compromise passenger safety or aviation security, as the affected system did not store banking or payment information. Approximately 8.7 million customers were impacted, with the majority of data comprising email addresses and WiFi sign-up details. MAG assured customers of its commitment to data security, apologizing for any inconvenience caused.

The breach was discovered on Tuesday, and MAG promptly contained the threat, notifying affected customers and authorities. Michael Goddard, a Manchester resident, expressed shock and concern over the breach, questioning the airport's reassurance regarding potential future compensation. The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) is investigating the incident and has acknowledged receiving a breach report from MAG.
