Gov. Landry: SEC ‘Creating a Legal Mess’ Over Athlete Eligibility

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has come to LSU's defense amid a potential legal battle with the SEC over athlete eligibility. Landry criticized the SEC's attempt to block LSU from signing two football players who had taken part in NFL preseason activities. He argued that the SEC is "creating a legal mess" over the players who the SEC had previously stated were out of eligibility.

Landry reiterated his year-long call for reform in college sports, criticizing both the NCAA and Congress for not addressing the issue. The controversy began when the NCAA introduced a new eligibility policy granting players an extra season, but only if they had not completed four years in college by 2022. Several players sued, and a judge recently ruled that they could return to college football despite having signed NFL contracts and participating in preseason activities.

LSU expressed its intention to sign the players, while the SEC subsequently banned professional athletes from rejoining SEC schools.
