Glacial collapse leaves hundreds dead along Nepal-China border

At least 273 lives were lost and around 1,400 individuals remain missing following a catastrophic glacial collapse along the Nepal-China border. The disaster occurred on Wednesday when an ice-and-rock avalanche in the Himalayas unleashed a torrent of water, mud, and debris into the Lhende Khola river system, eventually merging with the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli rivers.

Communities in Nepal's Rasuwa district were hit first, followed by the surge downstream into Nuwakot, Dhading, and other areas. Across the border in Tibet, debris struck Gyirong Port.

Nepalese authorities reported 270 confirmed deaths and 826 missing as of Thursday afternoon. In Tibet, Chinese authorities disclosed three fatalities and 558 people unaccounted for, leading to a total of about 1,400 individuals missing. Numerous foreigners, including pilgrims en route to Mount Kailash, are among the missing. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) dismissed the earlier theory suggesting an earthquake triggered the disaster.

Instead, they confirmed that the seismic signal initially interpreted as an earthquake was actually generated by the massive landslide itself, registering as a magnitude 5.2 event.

Satellite analysis revealed that a substantial section of glacier collapsed at an elevation of approximately 5,200 meters, plunging into the valley and setting off a devastating chain of events. The floods inflicted severe damage to infrastructure, with at least 19 bridges destroyed and about 40 kilometers of roads damaged. Hydroelectric projects also suffered impacts, and communications and transport links in the region were disrupted.

Nepal has mobilized thousands of security personnel, helicopters, drones, and search teams to the areas most affected by the disaster. Rescue operations continue, but the difficult terrain, damaged roads, high river levels, and disrupted communications pose significant challenges in reaching some of the hardest-hit communities. Authorities are closely monitoring the risk of further flooding, as a barrier lake upstream in Tibet poses an additional threat if it bursts. Continued rainfall could also trigger more landslides and flooding.
