Ghanaian woman reportedly dies in China after collapsing at airport

Mercy Yaaba Bredu, a Ghanaian woman, passed away in China after reportedly collapsing at an airport following her arrival from Ghana to pursue a master's degree. Bredu had left Ghana on Monday, August 24, 2026, with the intention of continuing her studies in China. Her journey, however, took a tragic turn when she collapsed at the airport on Wednesday, August 26, and was promptly taken to a hospital for emergency medical care.

She succumbed to her condition on the same day, as confirmed by her former University classmates in Ghana.

Born and raised in Ghana, Bredu had been a prominent figure in her academic community, serving as the Vice President of the Association of Students of English (ASSENS) at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) in 2024. She had completed her first-class honours degree and had secured scholarships to study in either the United States or China. Bredu ultimately chose China as the location for her higher education, aiming to further her studies while also exploring opportunities in the import business sector.

On Monday, August 24, Bredu embarked on her journey to China, eager to begin a new chapter in her life. Upon arriving at the airport on that same day, she reported feeling heart pain. Despite this discomfort, she was able to receive a bouquet of flowers from friends or colleagues at the airport. Regrettably, her health took a sudden turn just hours later, and she collapsed. Medical personnel quickly transported her to a nearby hospital, where she received treatment in an attempt to stabilize her condition.

Sadly, despite the best efforts of medical professionals, Mercy Yaaba Bredu succumbed to her illness on Wednesday, August 26. Her sudden and unexpected death has left her family and friends in Ghana devastated, as she had only recently arrived in China to commence her master's studies.
