Gastric stent developed in UAE could offer relief to patients after weight-loss surgery

In the United Arab Emirates, researchers have developed a biodegradable stent aimed at addressing gastric leaks that can arise following weight-loss surgery. The innovative 3D-printed device, created by scientists at New York University Abu Dhabi, dissolves within the body, eliminating the need for additional surgery to remove it.

The upgraded gastric stent, unveiled earlier this year, boasts enhanced materials that improve its functionality. Dr. Khalil Ramadi, an assistant professor of bioengineering at NYU Abu Dhabi, highlighted how the design modifications and incorporation of biodegradable materials aim to tackle the shortcomings of existing devices and pave the way for more effective patient treatments.

Gastric leaks, a complication that occurs in a fraction of bariatric surgery patients, can lead to abscess formation due to stomach fluid escaping. Current stents, primarily designed for bile ducts, may not function optimally within the stomach, resulting in slow drainage, slippage, and the need for multiple procedures. Parima Phowarasoontorn, a research assistant in Dr. Ramadi’s laboratory and the primary author of a paper on the improved stent, emphasized that medical devices often adapt from other applications rather than being specifically designed for the unique clinical challenge they address.

By leveraging advanced 3D printing and biodegradable materials, the research team has developed a stent, dubbed "Bridge," that enhances drainage and reduces the treatment burden for patients. Currently, gastric stents must be removed six weeks to three months post-fitting, requiring further surgery. The new device, developed in collaboration with Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, is expected to benefit various in-body drainage devices once further research is completed.

Notably, some UAE residents have already undergone a minimally invasive weight-loss procedure called Moviva gastric mucosal ablation, which targets the stomach's upper part to reduce hunger hormones and curb food cravings, leading to significant weight loss for some patients.
