GAMEFACE 2026: Top players to keep an eye on in the MVP race

As the race for the 2026 Republican Herald MVP heats up, several standout high school players are expected to make their mark. Quarterback Cohen Kirby from Blue Mountain, a multi-sport athlete, showcased his skills as a sophomore, completing 59.4% of his passes for over 1,600 yards and 18 touchdowns with only two interceptions. If Kirby can further develop his game, he could be a major contender, especially with a wealth of offensive talent including wide receiver Chase Guers.

Running back Colton Reber from Schuylkill Haven had an impressive sophomore year, rushing for 2,875 yards and 38 touchdowns in 2025, securing the Offensive Player of the Year award. With key players Niko Carestia and Niko Castillo graduating, Reber is poised to take on a larger role once again. Tamaqua's Terrence McDowell, another strong running back option, amassed 1,740 yards and 19 touchdowns on 315 carries last season.

Despite his smaller stature, McDowell possesses powerful running skills and the speed to evade defensive players, making a potential 2,000-yard season within reach. Tri-Valley's Parker Hatter, a dual-threat running back and receiver, had a solid sophomore campaign, rushing for 768 yards and scoring five touchdowns over 134 carries.

With the departure of Cole Gemberling, Hatter should see an increase in playing time and opportunities. Lastly, Blue Mountain's wide receiver Chase Guers, a committed West Virginia player, had a breakout junior season, catching 35 passes for 535 yards and six touchdowns, despite initial modest stats. On the surface, Guers appears to be a speedster with the ability to score on every play, should Cohen Kirby elevate his game.
