Fire destroys homes along Aboabo Pelele stream in Asokore Mampong

In a devastating fire on Thursday, August 27, 2026, several makeshift homes in the Asawase Pelele slum were destroyed, leaving hundreds of residents without shelter. The settlement, located in the Asokore Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region, is densely populated and primarily consists of wooden structures used by metal scrap dealers and head porters.

Many of those affected are young women with children, as well as men who migrated from northern Ghana for employment opportunities. The fire broke out in the early hours, posing challenges for the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) due to the haphazard arrangement of structures, which restricted access and made containment efforts difficult.

The GNFS arrived at the scene at 6:17 a.m., and firefighters managed to control the blaze by 7:13 a.m., averting further damage to neighboring structures. Asokore Mampong Municipal Fire Commander, DO III Wikana Daniel, emphasized the need for residents to provide accurate reporting details to assist firefighters in swiftly locating incidents. However, the exact cause of the fire and the full extent of the damage remain under investigation.
