FG begins distribution of electric vehicles to civil servants

The Federal Government has commenced the distribution of electric vehicles to civil servants as part of its initiative to promote cleaner energy and reduce transportation expenses. This announcement was made by the Director-General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council, Joseph Osanipin, during a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.

Osanipin revealed that this first batch of electric vehicles, as promised by the President, has been delivered to civil servants. He emphasized that this marks the beginning of a broader plan to increase access to electric vehicles and develop the necessary infrastructure to support alternative-energy transportation in Nigeria. Osanipin also mentioned that electric vehicle infrastructure has been established in approximately 16 universities across the country to foster the growth of an electric vehicle ecosystem.

He highlighted that the effects of government policies on electric vehicles and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) will become more evident as investments in supporting infrastructure continue to grow. Osanipin explained that infrastructure such as filling stations, mobile refill units, and gas production facilities are essential for the transition to alternative fuels, as they cannot be implemented solely through policy changes.

He noted that the number of companies licensed to retail CNG has increased from around four to 81, indicating a growing private-sector involvement in the government's CNG initiative. Osanipin provided an example of a traveler who experienced a significant reduction in fuel expenditure after switching to CNG and refilling in Kano, demonstrating the increasing availability of CNG beyond major commercial centers.

He also acknowledged concerns about commercial transport operators not passing the savings on to commuters through reduced fares and stated that the next phase of the government's intervention would aim to ensure that the advantages of cheaper alternative fuels translate into lower transportation costs. During his meeting with President Tinubu, Osanipin briefed the President on the automotive sector's developments, ongoing investments, and progress on draft legislation aimed at strengthening the policy and regulatory framework for the industry.
