Fanny Amun’s Fact-finding Committee Blames NFF Congress for Nigeria’s Football Problems

The Fanny Amun-led Fact Finding Committee, established by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has submitted a report blaming the NFF Congress for the country's football problems. The committee, comprised of various football stakeholders, spent two weeks investigating the reasons behind Nigeria's national teams' inability to qualify for global competitions.

The committee's report, a four-page document, criticized the NFF Congress for its unwillingness to implement necessary changes to the federation's statutes. It argued that the Congress, dominated by state FA chairmen and loyal to the leadership of the executive committee, remains a closed-knit body. The committee recommended that NFF Congress members should be knowledgeable, credible, and experienced, with a maximum of two terms in office.

Regarding the Super Falcons' failure to qualify for the 2026 Women's African Championship (WAFCON) in Morocco, the committee found no evidence of individual players influencing team selection. It stated that the players cooperated with each other and that there was no influence of individual players on the team selection process.

The committee also examined the case of Ashleigh Plumptre, who was excluded from the WAFCON 2026 based on a flimsy injury excuse. The committee reported that Plumptre, who underwent surgery and was not fit to play, was an integral part of the Super Falcons.

The committee expressed dissatisfaction with the free access to national team camps, arguing that it didn't agree with the process by which some officials infiltrated the camp without restrictions. They recommended that responsibilities within the technical department should be clearly defined, with better structures for player preparation, development, and performance management.

The committee also stressed that player selection should be based on current fitness and performance indices, with technical and medical teams making player fitness a major consideration. Finally, the committee called for a complete overhaul of Nigeria's league ecosystem to improve the performance of national teams.
