Dozens of US and Canadian citizens missing after flash flooding in Nepal

Dozens of American and Canadian citizens are among hundreds missing following deadly flash floods and mudslides near the Nepal-Tibet border, according to Nepali authorities. Over 350 people have died in the incident. The US State Department acknowledged that Americans were impacted by the floods, but declined to provide a specific number.

The US Embassy in Nepal is collaborating with local tour agencies and authorities to assist affected Americans. Canada's Foreign Office is monitoring the situation and ready to provide assistance if needed. Nepal police reported that over 500 tourists from 28 different countries are missing, with most being foreign nationals. The Nepal Tourism Board listed 65 people from the US and 25 from Canada among those missing.

China, which controls Tibet, reported 3 deaths and at least 558 missing, including 260 foreign nationals. The sources of the disaster are under investigation, with initial reports suggesting an earthquake may have triggered the avalanche, but the US Geological Survey now indicates the event was triggered by a landslide. Nepal's President called for intensified rescue and relief efforts.
