Delap joins Forest for £50m bidding to rebuild career

Nottingham Forest has secured the services of striker Liam Delap in a £50 million deal from Chelsea. This transfer stands out as a club record outlay for a centre forward who only managed one league goal last season while earning a £20 million profit for Chelsea. Delap, aged 23, has previously scored goals in the Premier League.

Delap's finest season to date was in 2024-25 when he scored 12 goals in his first Premier League campaign with Ipswich despite a struggling side. Ipswich's manager, Kieran McKenna, praised Delap's potential, suggesting he could be the long-term successor to Harry Kane. Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy also backed Delap, stating he could be the best young English striker.

Despite his impressive performance at Ipswich, Delap struggled at Chelsea, scoring just three goals in 47 appearances, a drop in form that led to him being demoted to the number nine shirt. His struggles were attributed to injuries, managerial changes, and difficulties adjusting to Chelsea's gameplan. Delap's shot conversion rate at Chelsea dropped significantly compared to his time at Ipswich, and he was less effective in terms of physical presence.

However, Forest manager Oliver Glasner, known for his man management skills and tactical setup, may be able to help Delap thrive. Glasner prefers a possession-based game and attacks directly at pace, which fits well with Delap's natural assets. Additionally, Glasner has a proven track record in revitalizing a centre-forward's career, having improved Jean-Philippe Mateta's shot conversion rate and reducing the time it took for him to score.
