Colts activate top receiver Alec Pierce from physically unable to perform list after ankle surgery

The Indianapolis Colts activated receiver Alec Pierce from the physically unable to perform list on Thursday, just two days before their final preseason game against the Detroit Lions. Pierce underwent surgery on his left ankle in March following the signing of a four-year contract extension worth $114 million. Initially, he attempted a platelet-rich plasma injection to expedite his recovery, but the treatment proved ineffective.

Pierce opted for surgery after realizing the injury would likely keep him sidelined for four to six months. In June, he acknowledged that surgery was the most prudent option for his long-term health, as the doctors had warned him of the potential timeline. His injury had been troubling him throughout the 2024 season, but he chose to play through the pain.

After the failed treatment, general manager Chris Ballard informed reporters that Pierce might miss up to two weeks of training camp as he continued his rehabilitation. However, Pierce missed all three weeks of preseason camp, along with Indy's first two preseason games, leading to concerns about his recovery and whether it could extend into the regular season.

He now has over two weeks to prepare before the Colts face the Baltimore Ravens in the opening game of the 2025 season. Coach Shane Steichen plans to start most of his players in Saturday's preseason finale, with the exception of starting quarterback Daniel Jones and 2021 NFL rushing champion Jonathan Taylor, who are likely to sit out with Pierce.

Pierce's new contract and Indy's trade of Michael Pittman Jr. to the Pittsburgh Steelers have cemented him as the team's primary receiver. Pierce had an outstanding two-season stretch, compiling the league's highest yards per catch among qualifiers in each year. In 2024, he gained 824 yards on 37 receptions, averaging 22.3 yards per catch and securing seven touchdowns.

Coming into the season, he will partner with fourth-year receiver Josh Downs, who moves up from the No. 3 role, while veteran Keenan Allen is poised to replace him at No. 3. Additionally, Indy will heavily utilize versatile tight end Tyler Warren, who set franchise rookie records in 2025.
