Chinese foreign minister calls for US and China to ‘overcome obstacles’ ahead of presidential summit

Bangkok (AP) — China's foreign minister, Wang Yi, expressed hope that his nation and the United States would overcome obstacles as a U.S.-China summit approaches next month. During a meeting with the U.S. ambassador to China, David Perdue, Wang urged both nations to concentrate on positive agendas, properly handle disagreements, eliminate interference, and eliminate obstacles to high-level exchanges between the two countries.

Wang acknowledged that China-U.S. relations continue to face various risks and challenges. In May, Trump and Xi pledged to keep the relationship stable and maintain the fragile trade truce. However, since then, both countries have taken targeted economic measures against one another, including the U.S. banning imports of new Chinese-made humanoid robots and China banning American entities involved in trade and other activities in China.

The U.S. has also imposed new tariffs on China, potentially up to 145%, although the tariff levels have since decreased. China maintains its firm opposition to the U.S. probe on excess capacity, alleging that the U.S. is politicizing economic and trade issues.
