‘Butcher of Srebrenica’ dies

Ratko Mladic, notorious as the "Butcher of Bosnia," passed away on Thursday at the age of 83 while incarcerated in The Hague, serving a life sentence for his role in some of the worst atrocities during the Bosnian War. His death was confirmed by a United Nations official amid reports of prolonged health issues and multiple hospitalizations.

Mladic's legacy as a military leader during the Bosnian conflict, which lasted from 1992 to 1995, is marked by his involvement in the siege of Sarajevo, ethnic cleansing, and the notorious Srebrenica massacre. Born in 1942, Mladic rose through the ranks of the Bosnian Serb Army and, from May 1992, served as its chief of staff. His strategic leadership during the conflict, particularly in the military campaigns against Bosnian Muslims and Croats, earned him a central place in the violence that accompanied the breakup of Yugoslavia.

Mladic's most infamous act was his command during the Srebrenica massacre in July 1995, where over 8,000 Bosnian Muslims were systematically executed. This act, recognized as genocide, cemented his place as one of the war's most notorious figures. Despite international efforts to bring him to justice since 1995, Mladic evaded capture for 16 years, protected by support networks.

His arrest in 2011 and subsequent trial led to a conviction for genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in 2017. He was sentenced to life in prison, a verdict upheld in 2021 by the UN's judicial mechanism. Throughout his latter years, health complications plagued him, leading to unsuccessful attempts to secure his release for medical reasons.

Mladic's death marks the end of a significant chapter in a war that left deep scars on the Balkans and continues to resonate globally.
