Bryan Kohberger moves forward on bid to withdraw Idaho murders guilty plea

A U.S. military judge has set a June 2028 trial date for Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind behind the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, and three accomplices. The trial is set to commence on June 5, 2028, 18 months after the initial January 2027 start date requested by prosecutors. This extended timeline is necessary to address pretrial disputes, such as disagreements over admissible evidence, according to Air Force Lt. Col. Michael A. Schrama, who issued the ruling.

The pursuit of justice for the alleged mastermind of one of the deadliest attacks on the United States has persisted for over two decades. Previous attempts to bring Mohammed to trial have been delayed, with a trial scheduled for 2021 ultimately canceled. Mohammed is accused of developing and directing the plot to crash hijacked planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, with another hijacked plane crashing in Pennsylvania.

Among the three co-defendants are Walid bin Attash, Ali Abdul Aziz Ali, and Mustafa al-Hawsawi. These four individuals are among the last remaining detainees held at the U.S. military base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. A federal appeals court recently overturned an agreement that would have permitted Mohammed to plead guilty, sparing him the risk of execution for his alleged role in the 2001 attacks.
