Brandon McCoy Jr. injury casts a pall over Michigan's Europe finale

Michigan basketball wrapped up its European tour on an emotionally charged note. After suffering losses to Lithuania's national and reserve teams, the Wolverines concluded with an 84-81 victory over Serbia's Mega Superbet on August 27 in Herceg Novi, Montenegro. However, the win was marred by a tragic incident. Brandon McCoy Jr., a five-star guard and one of the incoming McDonald's All-Americans, left the game after just 20 seconds due to an injury.

He had initially made a steal on the first possession, but slipped while driving to the basket in transition. McCoy fell to the ground, stayed down for a few moments, and was tended to by trainer Chris Williams. He eventually stood up, favoring his right leg, and was carried off the court back to the locker room. Unfortunately, McCoy did not return to the game.

The program has not yet released an update on the extent of his injury. The loss of McCoy overshadowed the contest, as Michigan trailed 49-38 at halftime and 3 points behind at the end of the third quarter. The Wolverines managed to come back, opening the fourth quarter with a 15-2 run led by Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney, securing a win.

The injury plagued Michigan throughout their European trip, with center Moustapha Thiam exiting early in the first exhibition game and Ricky Liburd missing all three games. Additionally, Trey McKenney and other players rested from minor injuries as a precaution. As the team prepares for the 2026-27 season, they will return to the United States on August 29 to continue their recovery process.
