Bill Gates proposes ‘Human Reserved’ jobs, robot tax to manage AI disruption

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has proposed designating certain jobs solely for humans and implementing taxes on artificial intelligence and robots to mitigate the disruption he anticipates in the labor market due to AI advancements. Gates detailed his proposals in a lengthy essay on his Gates Notes website, emphasizing the need to address the transition into an AI-driven world.

He introduced the concept of "Human Reserved" jobs, drawing inspiration from his father's care during his final stages of Alzheimer's disease, highlighting tasks that he believes remain uniquely suited for human care. Gates argued that these jobs, like elder care and mental health, require a human touch that cannot be replicated by machines.

He suggested that such roles should be preserved for economic reasons, particularly when automation could displace a large workforce unable to pivot to new careers. Gates also advocated for taxing AI and robots, citing current tax incentives that favor replacing human labor with machines. He argued that such a tax could slow the pace of job displacement while funding retraining and social support programs.

Gates acknowledged the complexity of the issue, noting that decisions about reserving jobs for humans would vary across countries based on their specific circumstances.
