AWLA confab: Rivers deputy gov tasks women on nation building

Rivers State Deputy Governor Prof Ngozi Odu addressed the African Women Lawyers Association, Nigeria's annual conference, emphasizing that women should not view themselves as mere beneficiaries of empowerment but as agents of transformation. She urged the attendees to mentor younger women, support women-owned businesses, promote education and skills development, and provide opportunities for women to participate in leadership and decision-making.

The deputy governor highlighted the theme, 'Excellence Wears Heels', which symbolizes confidence, resilience, dignity, and determination to overcome barriers. She stressed that women, as female lawyers and advocates, play a crucial role in influencing policies, advocating for vulnerable people's rights, and promoting access to justice.

Odu also praised the Nigerian Bar Association's President-elect, Mrs Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, for her victory in the recent election. She emphasized that women possess the potential and resilience to excel but need to actualize their potential. The NBA President-elect agreed, stating that although she did not run a gender campaign, women are still far behind and require affirmative action. She highlighted the importance of capacity building and acknowledged the presence of capable women in and outside the profession.

The President of AWLA-Nigeria, Caroline Ibharuneafe, described the conference theme as inspiring and thought-provoking, emphasizing that excellence is cultivated through hard work, commitment, resilience, continuous learning, and unwavering determination. She urged members to embody excellence in all aspects of their lives, both visible and behind the scenes. The keynote speaker, George Etomi, noted that excellence comes with expectations and urged men not to develop complexes when they see women around.
