Appointments Committte Chairman rejects Minority’s objection to rushed Supreme Court vetting

Parliament's Appointments Committee Chairman Bernard Ahiafor has rejected the Minority's objection to the rushed vetting process for three Supreme Court nominees. The Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, had formally objected to the three-day timetable, arguing that it was rushed and did not allow adequate time for scrutiny.

However, Ahiafor maintained that the President's request for Parliament's recall included the three judicial nominations alongside two ministerial appointments and a bill amendment. He emphasized that the recall mandate covered all matters in the President's request, including the nomination, vetting, and consideration of the three Supreme Court judges by the committee.

Ahiafor stated that the committee had already addressed the Minority's concern during a preliminary meeting. He clarified that the referral from Parliament included all three Supreme Court nominees and that they could not be vetted separately from the ministerial nominees. The Chairman further pointed out that the House had suspended Standing Order 217 to facilitate urgent consideration, and that waiving this order was sufficient for proceeding with the vetting process.

The Minority had argued that the absence of a vacancy on the Supreme Court did not justify an accelerated vetting process, and that nominees traditionally receive adequate notice and sufficient time for scrutiny. The dispute highlights the disagreement between the Majority and Minority on whether the current circumstances justify an accelerated vetting procedure.
