Anwar urges patience as govt works on comprehensive AUKU reforms for students

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 27 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has expressed the hope that all university students and stakeholders will place their trust in the comprehensive improvement measures being planned by the government for the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 (AUKU). Anwar, who has long opposed the act, stressed the government's commitment to bringing about thorough change for the benefit of students and higher education institutions.

He urged for patience and understanding, stating, "Give us room, as we aim to amend it comprehensively." Anwar highlighted the need for a thorough review process, involving discussions at the Ministry of Higher Education (KPT) and Cabinet levels, before any amendments or complete repeal of the act. He assured that the government is dedicated to providing broader political space and channels for student freedom of speech, guided by principles of good governance and well-regulated laws.

Moreover, Anwar requested the National Student Consultative Council (MPPK) to grant him time to convene a special meeting with student representatives to address their concerns regarding the act's validity and student welfare. "Give (me) a little time. I am focusing on the Budget... then Independence Day, then Malaysia Day... it will be very challenging, but insya-Allah, I will," he assured.

The MPPK had previously submitted two requests to the Prime Minister: involvement of the MPPK, comprising 35 student leader representatives from public universities, polytechnics, and community colleges, in the drafting or amendment committee; and a special meeting with the Prime Minister to discuss core student issues directly.
