Amazon nabs Dutch data analytics company DuckLabs

Amsterdam-based AI startup DuckLabs, known for the open-source analytical database DuckDB, has been acquired by Amazon Web Services (AWS). The transaction, undisclosed in detail, does not include DuckDB, which remains free and open-source under its existing non-profit oversight. Amazon's vice-president Andy Warfield praised the DuckLabs team for their commitment to empowering users to work with data confidently.

The acquisition aims to broaden DuckLabs' reach and pursue innovative data services. Co-founders Hannes Mühleisen and Mark Raasveldt will continue their leadership roles, focusing on DuckLake, a data lakehouse, and the Quack protocol. Amazon's cloud division has been collaborating with DuckLabs since 2024, hoping to leverage their expertise to expand their data services.
