Akwa Ibom criminalises use of ambulances to convey corpses

The government of Akwa Ibom State has passed a law making it illegal to use ambulances to transport corpses for burial throughout the state. During a briefing with journalists, Dr Ekem John, the State Commissioner for Health, announced the new reform. John, who was accompanied by his colleague from the Ministry of Information and the Governor's press secretary, emphasized that the law is one of the most significant advancements in the health sector in the state.

He warned that any ambulance, whether privately owned, state-owned, or operated by a mission, found transporting corpses for burial would be impounded. The State Commissioner explained that the law has brought the ambulance operations to a level comparable to that of Western countries. He clarified that all types of ambulances, regardless of ownership, are prohibited from carrying corpses, as they can pose a public health risk.

The law enables government officials to impound such ambulances, and he advised people to be aware that ambulances could be stopped on the road if they attempt to carry corpses. John stated that nine bills related to hospital governance, public health security, HIV prevention, and other health-related matters have been sent to the State House of Assembly for consideration.

Once the health standards regulatory bills become law, the agency will be able to set minimum acceptable standards for all health facilities in the state. Hospitals operating in the state will then be required to meet certain requirements before commencing operations.
