Abia, NRC sign pact for access road across rail corridor

The Abia State Government has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Nigerian Railway Corporation to build an access road across the railway corridor linking Okpara Square, Akanu Ibiam Street, and Bende Road in Umuahia, the state capital. Governor Alex Otti emphasized that this project is part of a larger plan to revitalize the state capital and alleviate traffic congestion in the corridor.

He stated, “And by the time we integrate the mega station into the terminal, it will become a transportation hub.” Governor Otti directed relevant officials to work together to expedite the project's completion. He also urged the Managing Director of the NRC to consider increasing the train fleet from Port Harcourt to Aba, assuring the corporation of the state government's support.

Otti mentioned the recent introduction of electric buses, with a total of 70 buses planned for the state. He directed the General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority to relocate the existing police station within the railway corridor to a temporary space and provide a design for a new railway station incorporating the police station.
