Abia, NRC sign pact for access road across rail corridor

The Abia State Government and the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to construct an access road across the railway corridor linking Okpara Square, Akanu Ibiam Street, and Bende Road in Umuahia, the state capital. Governor Alex Otti emphasized that this access road is part of a broader plan to modernize the state capital and address traffic issues around the corridor.

The governor stated that integrating the mega station into the terminal will create a transportation hub, combining the railway station, bus terminal, and other related facilities. Otti directed the relevant officials to collaborate and expedite the project's completion. He also requested the NRC Managing Director to consider expanding the fleet of trains from Port Harcourt to Aba and assured the corporation of the state's commitment to supporting federal efforts.

Otti further discussed the need for the proper relocation of an existing police station within the railway corridor and directed the General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) to initiate the necessary steps for relocation. The NRC Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, welcomed the MoU as it facilitates the construction of the access road and aligns with the state's vision to transform the transport sector.

Opeifa praised the Abia State Government for its responsiveness, responsible behavior, and commitment to due process, which led to the corporation approving the project.
