6,500-Year-Old Prehistoric Structure Found in Czech Republic Predates Stonehenge

Archaeologists in the Czech Republic have unearthed a prehistoric structure dating back 6,500 years, predating Stonehenge by about a millennium. The circular enclosure, located at Chleby in the Central Bohemian Region, is approximately 750 feet (230 meters) in diameter and features an 8-foot (2.5-meter) deep ditch. Unlike similar structures in the region, the Chleby site is unique as it appears to have been designed for astronomical tracking purposes, predating Stonehenge by 1,000 years.

The twelve entrances, which cut through the ditch at different points, form a geometric system that allowed ancient observers to track the moon's 18.6-year cycle and the sun's solstices and equinoxes. Researchers believe wooden posts once formed the enclosure's walls, but these have long since decayed, leaving only the ditch and animal bones as evidence.

The site also contains animal bones, including bull skulls, which indicate that the builders may have decorated the gates with these symbols, likely representing strength and fertility.

While the exact purpose of the structure is still unclear, it seems that the Chleby site was a significant religious and ceremonial center for prehistoric communities. Over time, the site's ritual significance faded, and it was eventually covered over by a Bronze Age settlement around 2300 to 1600 B.C. The exact transformation of the site's meaning is not entirely understood, but it is believed that the site fell out of use by the Iron Age, around 800 B.C. to 1 B.C., when a settlement was built directly on top of the former sanctuary.
